Have you ever heard of whisper repeating? It is a term used to define the process where a person repeats the same words in the form of a whisper after saying them aloud.
It is basically defined as a part of the Tourettes syndrome. There are two types of symptoms exhibited in the Tourettes syndrome which are categorised as:
- Palilalia.
- Echolalia.
Palilalia is a condition where the person has the urge to repeat the words spoken by himself. A person after saying what he wants will try to repeat the flow of words unconsciously in his mind or just by the movement of his lips.
Echolalia is a condition where the person has the urge to repeat the words spoken by other people.
Sometimes people tend to form this habit unconsciously. They start doing it for fun but end up making it into a habit. These habits can go on unconsciously. Persons affected with the habit of Whisper Reading will repeat the words either in their mind or or just by moving his or her lips.
For this condition to be broken a proper therapy session is required. A speech pathologist or a therapist can help towards getting rid of the habit of repeating the words spoken by himself/herself or spoken by others.
In case you have a child who is suffering from the habit of whisper reading do not put any pressure on him/her to stop it. It can only complicate the situation. Let the child continue doing it. Just see to it that you get in touch with a good therapist who can deal with the problem really well.
If a child unconsciously develops the habit of whisper reading he must not feel that it is something wrong or terrible. If you tell the kid that the habit he/she has developed is wrong, it can make the kid depressed. It is better to deal with the issue sensitively.
