What would you do if your children have speech and/or language difficulties? As a good parent, surely you feel the responsibility to take care your children. Therefore, through this article we will give you suggestions about things that you can do for your children, especially when you want to involve completely in the therapy process for your children.
Things that you can do are as follows:
- Help your child’s speech therapist understand about your children’s speech problem in all kind of situations and conditions. Your child’s speech therapist need to perform thorough assessment in order to make the most appropriate and suitable therapy.
- Try to have a continuous communication with your children’s speech therapist. Through this way, you will always have updated information regarding to your children’s therapy.
- Force yourself to observe your children’s therapy if it is not being done in the house. Work out a plan together with your child’s speech therapist that involves you as a participant.
- Never stop questioning. In case you do not understand about your children’s problem, the therapy, the evaluation, or some words used in the evaluation or report. You should ask your children’s therapist to explain even if he/she is not the person who made the report. Furthermore, you can ask about what your children’s speech therapist is doing with your children as a way of double-check with the information in the evaluation or report. Your children’s therapist as a professional must welcome any question and help you to understand about all things that relate with the therapy.
- Ask your children’s therapist to have the therapy at home. Have a discussion with him/her to synchronize your schedule and daily routines with him/her. Moreover, in the discussion, tell your children’s therapist about what you want your children are able to. As an example, your children cannot pronounce words clearly and fluently so tell him/her about this problem.
