Aphasia is a condition in which parts of brain are damaged. The parts that are damaged by this disorder are basically responsible for expressions and language. They are located on the left-hand side of the brain. It normally occurs suddenly due to head injuries or strokes. It may also be caused due to a brain tumor or dementia (serious brain disorder). The symptoms of this condition are:
- Problems in understanding Language: Aphasia is caused by the damage of the language area of the brain. Due to this damage, the person finds it quite difficult to understand basic languages.
- Inabilty to speak properly: Since the language part of the brain is damaged, it also affects the speech of the person. The person sometimes speaks in long insensible sentences.He also might speak in short, incomplete sentences which can be understood.
- Problems with speaking spontaneously: People suffering from Aphasia are slow learners and speakers. They are usually unable to respond to questions instantly. They need to be given some time to answer a question.
- Inability to Name Objects: The damage to brain’s lobe stops the patient from identifying objects. They have a short term memory and the power to think is less. Hence they are not able to identify objects.
- Poor Enunciation: Basically, enunciation is the way how one speak’s. Good enunciation means speaking clearly and precisely, something an Aphasia patient lacks. Instead, the patient mumbles.
- Excessive Creativity: In some cases the Aphasia patient is quite high on self creativity. He/she forms words that dont actually exist in nature. They can also be called Neologists (people who create new words which dont exist).
- Paraphasia: It is a feature of Aphasia where the person loses the quality to speak correctly. Instead he/she substitute one word for another and uses sentences in jumbled forms.
- Dysprosody: This factor is caused when there are injuries to the brain or brain tumors. It is also known as pseudo-foreign dialect syndrome. This factor affects the rhythm of the person and causes difficulties in pitch when speaking.
- Inability to Read and Write: In severe cases of Aphasia, the affected person is unable to read or write. This is a case usually seen in Global Aphasia(when both Broca’s and Wernicke’s Aphasia combine) .
