This article tells you how to prevent common running wounds such as chafing and blisters. When you log plenty of miles, your skin definitely gains a healthy glow. But, along the way you also get war wounds such as chafing and blisters. Such skin issues can make your daily run a miserable experience. These skin problems can affect your performance and may even make you stop running for a while. Here are a few common skin problems that runners often face:
Athlete’s Foot
This is a fungal infection that causes red, scaly, dry skin in between the toes. This malady can cause a burning or itching sensation. It usually occurs in summer, as the fungus thrives in a warm environment. To prevent this condition, wear light, synthetic socks. Apply antifungal powder to your feet before starting your run. After the workout, remove your soggy socks and get into dry ones. Athlete’s Foot can be treated by applying an antifungal cream.
Blisters
These are fluid-filled bubbles, caused by excessive moisture, friction or ill-fitting shoes. So, be careful and run in shoes that fit properly. Apply vaseline or sports lube over the affected spots. While small blisters can be ignored, the larger ones can be popped and drained by using a sterile needle. Afterwards, apply an antibiotic ointment and bandage the spot.
Chafing
This is caused by friction, that leads to a raw, red, rash. Chafing can sting and bleed, causing pain. It is worsened by salt and moisture on the body. Vulnerable areas are inner thighs and underarms. Wear snugly fitting clothes to avoid this problem. Before starting your run, apply NipGuards, Band-Aids, sports lube or vaseline. Chafing can be treated by washing the affected area and applying an antibacterial ointment. Then, cover the spot with a bandage.
Sunburn
Outdoor runners should know that the sun’s rays can cause swelling, pain, redness and even skin cancer. So, avoid running outdoors when the weather is hot. Schedule your run for the morning or evening. Wear sunscreen for protection. If you get sunburn, take an anti-inflammatory and apply aloe vera on the affected spot.
