Nicotine present in cigarettes is known to reduce stress. A new study was conducted by the University of California to find out the link between nicotine and anger . At the end of the study, the researchers found out that nicotine is helpful in easing anger response. They concluded that angry people are more likely to smoke as nicotine helps in the inhibition of anger
The Study to Find the Link Between Nicotine and Anger Response:
Researchers from the University of California conducted tests on 20 people to find out the effect of nicotine on anger response. Twenty non-smokers, about 9 women and 11 men participated in two sessions. In the first session they wore nicotine patches and in the second they wore dummy patches as placebos
The participants were asked to play a computer game against an imaginary opponent. In this game, the participant had to click on a red spot as fast as possible. It was designed to provoke and irritate the players. At the end of each round, the victor could give the loser a burst of unpleasant noise, for a particular period of time as a punishment
The researchers observed that nicotine helped the partipants to react with less anger when provoked. The participants who had nicotine- induced reductions in anger also showed changes in brain metabolism. The researchers say that nicotine acts on the parts of the brain that control emotion, thereby reducing the anger response
This study reveals the connection between nicotine and anger. Nicotine inhibits anger, and hence people who have anger issues are more likely to take up smoking to overcome them. The researchers suggest that anger management may be helpful for smokers to quit smoking
