Smokeless tobacco is that form of tobacco that is not smoked but chewed or snorted. It comes mainly in two forms, namely, snuff and chewing tobacco, and is known by many names like spit tobacco, chaw, dip, etc. They all contain high levels of nicotine and each small pinch contains nicotine equal to about three to four cigarettes.
The health hazards of smokeless tobacco are not restricted to the individual using it. While using chewing tobacco, the tobacco juices are sucked but not swallowed. This, along with the saexcess salive that builds up in the mouth has to be gotten rid of. The only way to do this is to spit out this build-up frequently. This gives rise to a number of health and hygiene issues.
Health issues
There are a lot of health issues associated with spitting, and especially spitting of tobacco. It leads to the spread of many airborne diseases and respiratory diseases. Tuberculosis is one of the very dangerous diseases spread because of this habit. The bacteria which spread these diseases are present in saliva. When this saliva is spit out, the bacteria envelop themselves in dust and become similar to spores. This helps them survive the heat of roads and other external surfaces. Due to the covering of dust, they can be easily carried by the wind and disperse. This causes to spread of various diseases.
Hygiene issues
Not only does this habit spread diseases, it is also against all civility and manners. It is a repulsive habit. It is disgusting to be around a person who chews tobacco because he/she has bad breath, stained teeth and may have tobacco stains on clothes.
