Tobacco is consumed mostly in the form of smoking, chewing, snuffing, dipping or snus. Smoking and chewing are the most studies aspects. Rate of smoking is rising in all countries. Majority of the people do not agree to the fact that “Chewing Tobacco Is More Dangerous Than Smoking” due to their lack of education in this field. They have a wrong notion of Smoking being less vulnerable to health hazards than the smokeless tobacco as they do not inhale or exhale smokes as they do with cigarettes.
Half-an-hour tobacco chewer ingests as much as nicotines in 4 cigarettes. Chewing 1 can tobacco is equivalent to smoking 60 cigarettes. More than 2 dozen cancer-causing agents are present in smokeless tobacco which cause oral as well as pancreatic cancers. So tobacco chewers have a higher risk of developing oral cancer than smokers. According to the Centre for Disease Control, about 30,000 Americans suffer from mouth and throat cancers each year and nearly 80,000 die of these diseases. Only about half of the population diagnosed with mouth or throat cancer survive more than 5 years. More than 50% of oral cancers are caused by smokeless tobacco products In India and Sudan population; about 4% of oral cancers in the U.S. men and 20% of oesophageal and pancreatic cancers in Swedish men.
Less severe but immediate effects of tobacco chewing is bad breathe, yellowish-brown stains on teeth and mouth sores. Other hazardous effects over smoking are – cracked, bleeding and receding gums; eroded tooth enamel and cavities. Prolonged use can cause tooth decay and tooth loss.
Smokeless tobacco causes more harm because they are directly ingested in to our body. They have small coarse particles which damages the delicate membranes and soft skin of the oral cavity and the digestive system organs. Thereby forming ulcers which gradually develops into cancers.
