According to a study done by the journal of “Occupational and Environmental Medicine”, obesity rate is increasing by 10% each year reaching to a peak of 44% in 2009. How are obesity and workplace related, lets see in detail.
What is Workplace Obesity ?
It is a known fact that, in 90% of the white collar job there is no time or need for moving from your chair. Many people eat there meals at there desk and store snacks in their desk racks. Added to the external or personal causes, workplace has it own reasons for the increase in the weight of the individuals.
Reasons for Workplace Obesity
Physical space: In the modern constructions, especially the one’s in the city centre, we get very less room to move around with in the building. If you want to have a walk, the only possibility is to go out of the building. Many workplaces don’t even have enough space in there staff room to accommodate 30% of there staff.
No physical activity: In a well organised office, there is no need to move around for any thing. Even water, printer and file cabins are hand reachable.
Furniture: According to a survey, if the furniture is too relaxing, no one will try to move from it.
Internet: Internet has it own pros and cons. Many pass there free time on the internet searching or shopping or chatting.
Work Constrains: There is a limited time to reach weekly goals and fulfill the deadlines, as a result may stick to their chairs.
