After the Bariatric surgery, the patients are not supposed to eat every thing. They must take special care of what they eat and drink. Dietitians counsel has recommended a diet routine which includes high protein and nutritious drinks in the first two weeks. A week after the surgery the patients can have easily soluble foods and over a period of time (about six to eight weeks) the patients can have normal solid food. It is very important, not to try new food with out knowing the effect on the body.
Post Bariatric Diet
Clear Liquid Diet — The first phase of diet after the surgery is clear liquid diet, and it is recommended by the dietitians counsel and American Obesity Association, that a minimum of 64 ounces of fluids per day is required to keep the patient well hydrated. The liquid diet can be any diluted fruit juice of apple, cranberry, and grape. Broths like chicken, beef and vegetable are preferred. Never drink any carbonated beverages, and remember not to use a straw to drink.
Full Liquid Diet — After a week, the patient can have normal liquid diet. This includes cream bariatic soups, low fat broth, skim milk, low fat yogurt, protein shakes and smoothies.
Pureed Diet — By a fortnight the patient can have pureed diet, food that has no pieces or chunks. It is important to incorporate pureed high protein food in the diet.
Regular diet — In about six weeks from the surgery, the patients can have a regular diet, but it should be soft, tender and easy to chew. Examples include finely diced meats, cooked vegetables, noodles, macaroni and canned fruit. Do not over eat, as it can damage the new small pouch. Instead you can have small meals at regular interval.
