Many women complain of a bloated feeling prior to their periods or during the stage which is often termed as the PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome). Experts say that it is quiet normal to gain weight before periods, which usually is a result of fluid retention in the body. Fluid retention starts about 10 days before a woman’s menstrual date. Often, women begin to experience typical symptoms from about 10 to 14 days in advance.
What Causes Weight Gain before Periods?
Experts say that it is absolutely normal for women to experience these physical symptoms prior to their periods:
- Swollen abdomen
- Fluid retention
- Swollen and aching breasts
- Food cravings
It is asserted that reduced activity or exercise combined with a tendency to eat more and all of the above physical symptoms can result in weight gain 10-14 days before periods. Studies suggest that a woman can gain as much as 1 kilo to 3-5 kilos during this phase.
Experts further explain that apart from gaining weight, etc before periods, women suffer emotional symptoms too, like frequent bouts of irritation, depression, etc.

- Switch to greens, fruits and vegetables than fat, oily and unhealthy foods, snacks, etc
- Exercise and remain as active as possible to overcome the menstrual cramps and ease better flow
- Restrict your meal size and consume as often to satisfy your hunger pangs
Experts suggest that sometimes antidepressants can also trigger weight gain before periods or during PMS. Women are recommended to consult a doctor to quit the medication or continue with alternative weight loss cures like exercise and healthy eating.
