In the recent years obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. According to American Obesity Association around 70% of the Americans are over weighed and 75% of which are under obese condition. Exogenous obesity is caused by excessive eating disorder. Social, emotional, situational, physiological and thoughts are some of the reasons for this condition.
Causes of Exogenous Obesity
Exogenous obesity has many causes some of them are eating disorders, boredom, social causes, psychological causes and other diseases
Social Causes: Eating food with out requirement, that is, when other people are around. Example: forced eating due to peer pressure, parties, and official meetings.
Emotional Causes: Eating good to avoid boredom, fatigue, depression, stress, anger, tension, loneliness.
Situational Causes: Eating just to utilise the opportunity. Example: eating something as you pass by a bakery or a restaurant. Eating while watching a movie or a sport, just as an added material for fun.
Physiological Causes: Eating due to some physical or medical issues. Cerebral tumor or damage, Kleine-Levin Syndrome, Bulemia nervosa, Diabetes Mellitus and Steroids are some of the causes for exogenous obesity
Solutions for Exogenous Obesity Problem
- To prevent exogenous obesity, the first thing to be done is, not to over eat. One more good idea is to develop alternatives for eating when unnecessary.
- In most of the social cases, we can avoid taking food with excuses like ill health, diet routines, treatment. If it is compulsory to eat, then you can have low fat salads, raw vegetables etc.
- To avoid eating with emotions, try listening to music, reading book, talk to friends, play games or go on a walk or jog.
- Situational causes can be controlled only by dedication and stubborn decision on not eating any thing useless.
- Eating due to physiological causes can be reduced by taking proper medication for the illness or by practicing yoga
