Chinese researchers found that excess intake of Niacin vitamin is one of the risk factors for obesity in the long run. The results of their study were published in the May 21st, 2010 edition of the World Journal of Gastroenterology.
The research has special implications in the recent times as there are very few research studies done on the relation between obesity and changes in diet worldwide.
How Niacin Vitamin Excess Consumption Causes Obesity?
Dietary factors were always known to be closely related to the development of obesity. But the epidemic increase of this disorder in recent times raises the concern that some changes in worldwide intake of diet has certainly taken place. One of the neglected aspects in this context is the consumptions of foods rich in niacin. Effects of its long term exposure on health are still not known.
In the present study the researchers wanted to find the influence of excess niacin consumption in the metabolism of glucose. They learnt that when the levels of this vitamin increases in the blood, it causes insulin resistance in the initial stages and later lead to hypoglycemia state in the body. This development can be the main reason for raise in the appetite of obese people.
The study also found that grain products had this vitamin induced in them at higher levels. Consumption of these food items by adults and children in the United States and raise in obesity rates in this country took place simultaneously in the last 10 years.
Is There a Way Out ?
Yes, certainly. The researchers believe that elimination of excess niacin vitamin from the body through sweat by physical activities can be highly beneficial in preventing and treating the physical disorder of obesity in our society.
Further research on this topic is under-way and with gaining of more insights, the role of excess intake of this vitamin in obesity will be becoming even more clearer.
