Daniel fast is a spiritual fast which is followed by Christians in honor of god. In the book of Daniel, there is an incident which happened in the 6th century based on which this fast is practised. Daniel fast is different from the other fasts of Christians. It is done by following a restricted diet in which you cannot enjoy any delicacies.
Incident for the Origination of Daniel Fast: In the 6th century B.C., Daniel and three of his companions were taken into captivity by the Babylonian army. They were to serve the king in all the king’s work. This happened when Judah was seized. Daniel and his three companions were chosen to work with the king. Working with the king required a diet offered by the army which was against Daniel’s tradition. Hence, he refused to take their diet and instead had only vegetables and water. He forbade all the kingly delicacies like meat and wine. This continued for 10 days, and eventually the four of them became physically and spiritually stronger than anyone in the army.
Purpose of Daniel’s Fast: It is practised to have a physical experience which will give us an insight of God. This fast reflects the commitment which we are ready to show, to attain a deeper insight of God. This fast is in no way concerned with weight loss or other benefits, but to purely gain a spiritual sense of god.
Types of Daniel Fasting: Daniel fast is followed in two ways. One is done for 10 days, where the diet consists of only vegetables and water. Another is done for 21 days, in which the diet consists of vegetables, fruits, beans, water and liquids such as all natural fruit juices.
