Darfur Fast is mass fasting taken by people from several countries for the purpose of peace in Darfur where millions of people are suffering due to lack of food supply and basic necessities.
Where is Darfur: Darfur is a region in Sudan. It is divided into North Darfur, South Darfur and West Darfur. It is about 493,180 square kilometers (190,420 square miles).
Darfur is known for the ‘Darfur conflict’ which was one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world. This has led to 300,000 of deaths and over 2.5 million migrations. Several steps are taken for the re-habitation of Darfur after the disaster. Fasting for Darfur is taken up recently to attract a thought towards the suffering people of Darfur.
Fasting to end genocide: In response to the pathetic conditions of people in Darfur, many concerned citizens have fasted for 40 days from 9th of May 2009 to 17th June 2009. A hundred day fast was also undertaken by some countries. This massive fasting had two goals:
- Protection of Darfur civilians through the immediate steps of international peacekeeping force. This should end the genocide.
- Donor countries should fulfill their promises to fund humanitarian operations in Chad and Sudan.
Darfur fasting is the hope, though in a small way, to help the millions of uprooted Sudanese. It is an effort to restore peace and society in the place.
