Religions worldwide have a huge acceptance in cleansing your body by fasting. Islam, Hinduism and Christianity are major influences on religious fasting. It has been proved time and again, that prayer and fasting bring us closer to god and help us take solace in his power. Fasting and prayer are the mediums through which we attain the blessing of the higher power.
Fasting is not an obligation which every person has to carry out in his or her lifetime. It is a ritual through which spiritual attainment is obtained. Fasting is a concept where one has to abstain from food, drinks and sex so as to have spiritual growth. It is supposed to separate us from the needs of our flesh and increase god-consciousness. Fasting also increases the power of your prayers. In every religion, fasting is always connected to prayer. No one thing can be done to get spiritual solace. Prayer and fasting are always done together.
It has been mentioned in the Bible (Matthew 6:16-18) that, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you”.
How to Do Religious Fasting-
- Fasting can also mean an opportunity for cleansing your body. Eat a good meal before you start your fast.
- If there is no specific time period which your religion states, then a fast which lasts for 12-24 hours is sufficient. Anything less than 12 hours, does not count much and anything more than 24 hours can be a little hazardous to health.
- Prayer is a very vital aspect of fasting. Make the most of the opportunity to gain spiritual knowledge.
- Always pray before, during and after fasting. Remember to always end your fast with prayer and an offering to god.
