It occurs most commonly in response to allergy, infection, trauma or surgery. It has many causes and symptoms. Most of the inflammation are not very serious but it is better to control severity in inflammation.
Causes of eye inflammation
- Viral and bacterial infections: Conjunctivitis and pink eyes are the most common viral and bacterial infections. Blepharitis, eyelid inflammation caused by eye infection, is also an eye problem. Styes is another problem. These are tiny painful infections which form in the oil glands around the eyelash. Most of these problems arise due to surgery, injury to the eye, improper use of contact lens, trauma and touching the eyes without washing the hands.
- Cosmetics: Few eye cosmetics may cause irritation. It may be either due to personal sensitivity or having exceeded their expiry date.
- Foreign substances or foreign matter: Grit, plant sap or dust can get trapped under the eyelids, causing discomfort and inflammation.
- Improper use of contact lens: If hygienic conditions are not maintained or using lens of that are expired can cause inflammation or infection. Wash your hands properly before putting or taking out your contact lenses. Use correct solution and store it properly. When some allergens get trapped between the eyes and the lens, it can cause irritation. Wearing lens for long time can also cause some problems.
- Disease and illness: Herpes, diabetes and measles can cause eye inflammation. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are spread easily in the eye. Some inflammatory conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, lupus and arthritis may also be causes.
- Vitamin A deficiency: This deficiency can result in eye infections or other eye problems.
- Overuse of medication and eye drops: Overuse also causes eye problems.
- Allergies: Allergies and inflammation can cause eye irritation. Allergic rhinitis that is triggered by seasonal changes, molds, pollen, house dust, mites or pets can result in inflamed and itchy eyes.
