Corneal opacity is the condition in which some part of cornea get injured due some injury or infection. This prevents light from passing through cornea in a proper manner. When such condition arises, the lay of light bends and then it is focused on to the retina. Thus, resulting in loss and degradation of the vision. Such conditions are found in both man and animals.
Cornea is a clear and transparent layer present on the outer surface of the eye. It is made up of 5 layers and any kind of damage to any single layer of cornea can result in clouding of cornea. Thus, causing corneal opacity.
Causes For Corneal Opacity:
The causes for corneal opacity includes:
- Deficiency of vitamin A
- Measles and some other infections like pink eye, conjunctivitis, eyes herpes, herpes zoster or shingles,
- An injury caused to the eye due to some chemical
- In case the eye is hitted or poked by some object
- Wearing contact lenses for a very long duration or in case you sleep in the night with your contact lenses then it can also result in this condition.
Symptoms For Corneal Opacity:
The symptoms for corneal opacity includes:
- Decrease in vision quality or complete vision loss
- Person will have a feeling that something is there in the eyes, which will not go ever after you try to flush it out with water.
- Eyes of the patient will become sensitive to light
- Intense redness will be there
- Some part of cornea will a cloudy or milky look
Treatment For Corneal Opacity:
The condition of corneal opacity can be treated using some oral medications or steroidal and antibiotic eye drops. In severe cases, surgery is performed. Laser surgery is done to remove the injured part of cornea, thus removing the cause of the problem.
