Cornea is the central part of the eye which focuses to create the image of the image in the eye. Any kind of damage of dystrophy in this part can result in vision loss. Corneal graft is the surgery of the eye in which transplantation of cornea is done to repair any such damage or dystrophy in the eye.
In the process of corneal grafting whole of the cornea is replaced with the donor cornea. Although the process does not take a longer time but recovery time in this case is very long.
Procedure Of Corneal Graft:
The procedure of the corneal graft includes the removal of the damaged cornea with a healthy cornea donated by someone. Usually cornea donor are the those people who donate their eye while dying. But still, donation of the same requires the consent of both the deceased and his or her family.
Before implanting any such cornea the doctors must ensure that is checked properly and do not carry any kind of infection with it. The operation is carried out under general anesthesia. The operation involves the removal of the infected cornea in a circular motion and replacing it with a new cornea of the same size and shape.
The new cornea is placed in the same space and stitched from all sides with fine stitches.it is not a complicated operation and hence is easily carried out in an span of an hour or so.

Great care must be taken in ensuring that the cornea of the donor must be of the same shape and size as that of the receiver. In case it does not happen it can result in rejection of the cornea by the eye which can be fatal too.
