Vitreous detachment is a common eye condition which mostly afflicts people who are over 65. This is around 75% of the population. With increasing age, the vitreous also gradually changes. This is a gel-like substance which is present inside the eye. This may lead to the eye condition, vitreous detachment. This vitreous is a fluid is found between the space in front of the retina and behind the eye lens. Read on to know more about the causes and treatment of vitreous detachment.
Causes of Vitreous Detachment
The vitreous fluid is present behind the eye lens. This is attached to the retina at birth. As there is a gradual change in the vitreous, the vitreous humor shrinks and detaches from the surface of the retina over time. In a few cases, the vitreous may completely peel away from the surface of the retina. This event usually happens all of a sudden. Refractive error and age play a crucial role in the development of this eye condition.
Detection of Vitreous Detachment
Only one way is available to diagnose the main cause of the eye condition. This diagnostic method is a dilated eye examination in a comprehensive manner. If this eye condition has caused a detached retina or macular hole, early prognosis and treatment can certainly help in complete vision loss.
Treatment for Vitreous Detachment
In most of the cases, the eye condition does not result in loss of vision. Although, in a few rare cases, the hard pull on the vitreous fibers may cause a retinal detachment or lead to a macular hole. Both the conditions may threaten the eye sight. Hence, it is important to treat both the conditions immediately.
If immediate treatment is not done, a detached retina or macular hole may cause permanent loss of vision in people who are afflicted with vitreous detachment. Even those who suddenly experience flashes of light or floaters in their field of vision should immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
