Eye chalazion is a small lump of the eyelid which is caused by oil gland obstruction within the lower or upper eyelid. This lump size may increase over days to weeks and become warm, red or painful. This article gives information about treatment for eye chalazion.
Home Treatment for Eye Chalazion
- Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup until the chalazion gets healed.
- Do not rub or touch your eyes. Use of warm, wet compress helps to heal chalazia faster. Make a compress by using a cotton swab or clean cloth. Use only purified or boiled water to wet the cloth. Then, place it on the eye 4 to 6 times everyday. Wash your hands before you apply a compress. Place the compress over the eye until it starts getting cooled. For faster healing, you can use normal saline solution in place of tap water.
- Warm guava leaves and place them on a warm cloth, then use as a compress to reduce swelling, redness and pain.
- Boil acacia leaves in two cups of water. Prepare a decoction and use it as a compress on the eyes or eyelids. It reduces pain, swelling and helps to remove chalazion.
- Allow the chalazion to burst out by itself. Do not open or squeeze a chalazion.
- If an eye chalazion is not healing with the treatment at home, talk to your eye doctor. The doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or eye ointment.
- Wash your hands properly before applying eye drops or eye ointment. Don’t touch the applicator tip with your hand. Make sure that you don’t let the ointment tube tip touch the eye or eyelid.
- Steroid medicine injection is given in the lump area. It helps to decrease inflammation.
- If a chalazion lasts for weeks or creates symptoms, there may be need for surgery to remove it.
- If the swelling lasts for more weeks or shows symptoms of blurring of the vision, an ophthalmologist may suggest you to undergo surgery in order to remove the chalazion.
