Sports persons may risk eye injury if they fail to wear proper eye protection. Sport eyewear is mostly used by people who pick up a bat, racquetball or stick. This article gives information about protective sport eyewear.
Protective Sport Eyewear
- Sports in which racquetball, flying objects or balls are present may cause potential injury to the eye.
- Sports such as tennis, badminton and racquetball may seem harmless, but the objects used in these sports move at sixty miles per hour or even faster.
- Flying objects are not only the hazard. Eye injury may also result from jabs and pokes by fingers and elbows. For example, basketball has increased risk of eye injury. Hence, it is necessary to wear protective eyewear.
- Sunglasses, eyeglasses and even industrial safety glasses do not provide enough protection for sports purpose.
- Sports goggles are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Many eyewears are designed for soccer and basketball. Some are available for even baseball, hockey and football.
- Sports eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate. It is an impact resistant material of lens and protects the eyes from fast moving objects. It also protects the eyes from ultraviolet rays.
Eye protection for paintball and handball
- Earlier, handball players used to wear simple goggles without lenses, where small openings were left in the place of the lens. When handballs with high speed hit the eye, they may protrude through the openings and cause serious damage to the eye. Hence, use of goggles without lens is strongly discouraged.
- It is the same with paintball. Players should wear total facial protection, if not they may be at risk of getting eye injuries.
Sport eyewear for children
- Sports eyewear or goggles should fit properly on the person who wears them. This is mostly important with children.
- Children are tempted more to buy a larger goggle.
- But this is not good as the goggles that do not fit properly may result in increased risk of eye damage.
- Similarly, if a youngster continues to wear goggles even after he/she outgrows them, it can be dangerous.
- Review the sports goggles of your child every year and make sure they provide proper protection.
