We come in contact with numerous chemicals and substances on a daily basis. Then we tend to touch our eyes absent mindedly. This can lead to eyelid rash. It causes eye discomfort. Even autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions can cause eyelid rashes. It happens quite frequently in women. The skin over the eyelids is very thin. That is why, it is highly susceptible to rashes.
You should always consult an allergist if you have any rash in your eyelid. Sometimes blood test is performed to find out the exact cause of your eyelid rash.
Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis can result in eyelid rashes. If you are allergic to mold spores, pet danders, dust mites and pollens, then you are highly prone to eyelid rashes. Generally, atopic dermatitis affects the other body parts like flexural surfaces. Sometimes food allergies may also cause atopic dermatitis. This may include the eyelids as well as the face.
Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis is caused by cosmetics that are directly applied to the eyelids, for example, eye liner or eye shadow. These cosmetic products may contain variety of antigens causing the eyelid rash. Quaternium — 15 and formaldehyde are such type of antigens. Eye cosmetics that have a blue or green color may contain cobalt or nickel. This also causes contact dermatitis.
Even chemicals used on the scalp like hair dye, conditioners, shampoo, etc. can cause contact dermatitis. Initially a rash won’t appear on the scalp as the skin on the scalp is very thick.
Eyelid rashes can also be caused by chemicals present on the hands. When you touch your face, these chemicals are transferred to your eyelids. Nail resins/hardeners and nail polish are also common causes of eyelid rashes.
