Extropia is a condition in which the eye deviate outwards while focusing at the distance objects or the near objects or the both. When the eye is turned outwards at all the times and at all the distances then it is known as Constant Extropia.
If the eye turns outwards only sometimes then it is known as Intermittent Extropia or Alternating Extropia. If the condition arises as that the eyes turns outwards and do not return back to their position or converge back then it is known as Convergence Insufficiency OR Exophoria.
Causes Of Extropia:
The causes of Extropia can be summarized in the following points:
- Actually the main cause of Extropia is not yet known but it is understood that it is caused due to some muscle misfunction.
- Six of the muscles are responsible for the movement of the eyes. Four are responsible for its up and down movement. While two are responsible for side to side movements. All these are responsible for the proper functioning of the eyes.
- In case any of these or a combination of these muscles do not function properly then this condition of Extropia arises.
- This condition is generally found in children where it may due to Some kind of problem in the brain like cerebral palsy, Down syndrome,hydrocephalus, and brain tumors.
Symptoms Of Extropia:
Some of the symptoms of Extropia can be;
- The first and the foremost sign is the deviation of the eyes when the child is day dreaming,not feeling well or tired.
- This occurs usually when the child wants to see the distant object.
- The child will rub his or her eyes frequently as the vision is not clear.
