Detached retinas or retinal detachment is considered as a disorder of the eye where the retina of the eye pulls away from the basement layers of its support tissues. Initial detachment may be localized but in case immediate treatment is not undertaken, then, there are chances that the entire retina can come out. In such cases, blindness and loss of vision are very much possible.
Actually, retina is a thin layer containing the tissues which are sensitive to light on the wall at the back of the eye. The light is focused on the retina from the optical system of the eye, it is very much similar to a camera where the light is focused on the film of the camera.
Once the image is focused on the retina it translates it into neural impulses which are finally transferred to the brain through optic nerves. Sometimes, an injury or trauma to eye or the related part of head, or detachment of posterior vitreous can result in tearing of the retina. This tearing will allow the vitreous fluid to flow away thus leaving a bubble in wallpaper.
Signs & Symptoms Of Detached Retina:
The detachment of retina is preceded by the detachment of posterior vitreous which shows the following symptoms:
- The flashes of light will be noticed on the extreme peripherals of the eye.
- Number of floaters will rise suddenly in the eye
- The temporal side of the central vision will have a ring of floaters
- Heaviness in the eyes will be noticed
It is not the fact that all the posterior vitreous detachment do not turn into retinal detachment but in case they are going to be converted they show the signs like:
- The shadow which was forming in the peripheral region will now be shifted to the central vision point.
- The person will get a feel that there is a curtain in the vision field
- All the straight lines like the road, wall will appear to be curved
- Loss in the central vision formation will be there.
