Computer vision syndrome is a condition involving temporary weak vision, light sensitivity, dry, irritated eyes, fatigue and eyestrain, and other eye, muscular and vision problems that arise from the use of computers. It is a common problem. This computer vision syndrome occurs more commonly when compared to carpal tunnel syndrome, which is another condition that affects computer users.
Even glare from lights and lamps that are around can lead to eyestrain. Moving the computer station, or installing screens, shades, or blinds can reduce glare.
Tips for soothing your eyes
In order to treat computer vision syndrome you can use following tips to soothe your eyes.
- Sleep: Sleeping relaxes the eyes. If you do not get time, at least close your eyes for 5 minutes, it can help.
- Steaming towel: Try a steaming towel if cold water does not work. Steaming towel prepared with eucalyptus oil or menthol can be quite refreshing.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water and avoid sweetened and caffeinated drinks. Maintaining good hydration keeps your health good and lack of fluid in the body can strain the eyes and everything else.
- Cucumber Slices and Tea Bags: Beauty tips such as placing cucumber slices or tea bags on the eyelids can help to soothe them. It gives some relief to the eyes. However, a cold compress can be more effective.
- Don’t sleep in contacts: Do not wear contacts while sleeping. They will dry the eyes and stress your eyes while sleeping.
- Lubricate your eyes: Always stay hydrated. Use artificial tears instead of eye drops, for temporary help. Flaxseed oil can also help to relieve dry eyes.
- Massage your face: Massage your face. Rub your forehead, your temples and your cheek bones. It will increase flow of blood and help to relax surrounding muscles.
- Stretch your neck: Close your eyes and do some neck stretches. It will increase blood flow and relieve neck strain which occurs along with computer vision syndrome.
