Causes of Episcleritis
- Behcet’s Disease: This disease can cause blood vessel inflammation. This inflammation can result in manifestations in body systems and different organs. This can lead to serious complications like blindness, meningitis and lung aneurysm.
- Felty Syndrome: It is a long-term rheumatoid arthritis which occurs rarely. It involves blood abnormalities and an enlarged spleen. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, malaise, weight loss, anorexia, joint pain, recurrent mouth infection, joint deformity, recurrent infection, bronchitis, sinusitis, leg ulcers, furunculosis, enlarged liver, enlarged spleen, swollen lymph nodes, anemia, pallor, fever and blood vessel inflammation.
- Besnier-Boeck-Schaumann disease: It is a rare disease which results in the formation of inflammatory granular nodules in various organs. Some of the symptoms include cough, fever, weight loss, fatigue, chest pain, cyanosis, vision difficulty, breathing difficulty, joint pain, bell palsy, enlarged spleen, enlarged liver, adenopathy, eosinophilia, low levels of blood platelets, high levels of urine calcium, rales, polyarthritis and scleral nodules.
- HIV/AIDS: HIV is a virus that causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV can be transmitted from one person to another during sexual contact which involves oral, vaginal or anal sex. It can also be passed through contact with body or blood fluids. HIV can be passed through other means such as from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding.
- Lupus: This disease mostly affects women and causes various effects throughout different organs of the body. It’s severity depends on the body organ which is affected. It can be mild or extremely serious.
- Hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis: This condition occurs rarely and is characterized by recurring urticarial vasculitis, arthritis or arthralgia and hypocomplementemia.
- Pancolitis: It can be also called as ulcerative colitis. It causes inflammation of rectum and colon. Symptoms can include abdominal cramps, extracolonic manifestations-erythema nodosum, sacroilitis, aphthous ulcers, pyoderma gangrenosum and iritis.
- Polyarteritis nodosa: It is a blood vessel disease where arteries become swollen and get damaged. This results in inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to different tissues in the body.
- Polychondritis: This disease is a serious, episodic, progressive condition which is characterized by inflammation and cartilage degeneration in the body. Some of the causes include vision difficulties, conjunctivitis, red ears, swollen ears, ear inflammation, fever, pain, drooping ears, ear tenderness, joint pain, nose cartilage destruction and speech difficulties.
