Ectropion affects eyelids and can occur in newborns who exhibit Harlequin type ichthyosis. This condition can be treated by surgery. It can also be seen in dogs, in certain breeds as a genetic disorder. This article gives information about the causes of the condition.
Causes of Ectropion Eye
Following are the causes which include:
- Down’s Syndrome: It is a genetic chromosomal disorder which affects physical features and causes mental retardation.
- Ageing: Ageing is the common cause of ectropion. As your age increases, the muscles and skin around your eyes start weakening and this can lead to drooping eyelids.
- Facial Nerve Palsy: This condition is a weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles, which affect one side of the face.
- Bell’s Palsy: It is a kind of facial paralysis which results from 7th cranial nerve damage.
- Neurofibromas: It is a benign tumor which originates from nerves. Neurofibromas affect nerve cells that are close to the body surface.
- Tumors: Large growth on your eyelids can result in drooping eyelids.
- Blepharospasm: It is a movement disorder which causes abnormal muscle spasms. It results in uncontrollable blinking of the eye.
- Injury or Damage: Skin damage or injury around the eyes due to surgery, facial burns or a chronic condition of the skin such as eczema or dermatitis, can cause this eye disease.
- False Eye: Occasionally, if you wear a false eye your eyelid can experience long-term pressure causing the disease.
- Glasses: If you wear poorly fitting glasses which drag down on your lids, it can cause this disease.

- Ocular prosthesis
- Parotid gland tumor
- Trauma to the eye
- Facial burns
- Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
- Chronic dermatitis
- Trauma or scarring from previous surgery
- Eyelid scarring
- Stroke
- Perinatal-lethal Gaucher disease
- Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans
- Acrofacial dysostosis atypical postaxial
Symptoms
- Red, irritated eyes
- You may feel difficulty in closing your eyes.
- Watering eyes
- Vision loss (in severe cases)
