Blood shot eyes is a condition which occurs due to the enlargement or congestion of tiny blood vessels present on the eyes surface, with blood. It is a term commonly used for “red eye”.
The enlargement or congestion of the blood vessel occurs due to insufficient supply of oxygen to the cornea or the tissues covering the eyes.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of this illness are as follows:
- Stomach ache
- Swelling of the feet and hands.
- Coughing, sneezing and sniffing
- Headache
- Neck pain
- Itchiness
- Dry eye
- Pus or mucus
Causes
The most common cause of bloodshot eyes is straining of the eyes. Reading in dim light, sitting in front of the computer for a long time or very bright light causes the eyes to strain.
Conjunctivitis is another cause of this illness which is mainly a bacterial infection.
High fever, allergic reactions and excessive alcohol consumption also causes the eye to appear blood shot.
Trauma causes internal hemorrhage, due to which tiny blood vessels get damaged resulting in excessive bleeding.
Treatment
- Splash plenty of cold water on the eyes on an hourly basis.
- While in front of the computer, avoid staring at it for a long time. Take frequent breaks in between your work.
- Simple eye exercises can also help prevent this illness. Rolling the eyes now and then, moving them up and down, left and right while keeping the head still. This helps strengthening the eye muscles.
- Eye drops containing Cineraria Maritima and Eupharasia Officinalis are very effective in treating blood shot eyes.
Basically, bloodshot eyes is not major concern but, if in case there is sever eye pain or visual complications, it could be a serious problem. Visit an eye specialist immediately.
