The Ayurvedic term for anxiety is Chhitodveg. According to Ayurveda, panic disorder or anxiety occurs due to disturbed Vata dosha. Hence, correcting the vata dosha is a cure for anxiety. There are various ways to cure anxiety problems in Ayurveda which are discussed in this article.
Ayurvedic view of Anxiety
According to Ayurveda, the main cause of the disease is the imbalance in the normal values of the mind with increase in the rajas and tamas states. These may also cause a distortion in the body humors.
Ayurvedic Cure for Anxiety
Following are some Ayurvedic home remedies for anxiety treatment –
- Basil — Put the freshly extracted juice of Basil leaves in the nostrils as nasal drops. Basil soothes the brain, relieves anxiety, boosts intellect and acts as a nerve tonic.
- Shankhushpi — Pound dried Shankhushpi into a powder. Take 1 tsp twice daily along with warm cow’s milk.
- Use ghee (clarified butter oil) made from cow’s milk, or almond oil as nasal drops 2 or 3 times a day.
- Petha (White gourd) — Use Petha in your regular meals. Crush its pulp and extract the fresh juice. Take 10 to 20 ml twice a day.
- Brahmi — Pound Brahmi to extract juice. Take approx. 20 ml twice or thrice.
- Calming tea – Tea can be prepared by mixing Valerian and Musta herbs. Drink this tea twice a day.
Characteristic Symptoms of Anxiety
A variety of symptoms may be present –
- Loss of sleep, disturbed sleep.
- Loss of appetite
- Mental instability and depression
- Occasional pain in the chest, palpitations, excessive perspiration, giddiness, loss of breath and fainting.
Meditation is also the best treatment for relief from anxiety. Lying straight in a relaxing pose with hands on your sides in the yoga position also helps relieve anxiety.
