The Ayurvedic name for gout is Vaata Rakta. It is a disease associated with disturbed vata dosha. Gout is a type of arthritis of inflammation in joints. In gout, usually ankles and feet joints are affected at a time. Gout is extremely painful inflammation. It can be caused due to disturbed metabolism of the body. Various Ayurvedic treatments and home remedies for gout are discussed in this article.
Ayurvedic view of Gout
- This disease is caused by the vitiation of the vata or the air body humor.
- An improper diet and improper elimination of metabolic wastes from the body are the predisposing factors.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Gout
- Manjishtha — Take 50 ml decoction of Manjishtha twice a day.
- Panchattka ghritta — It pacifies Vata dosha which is resposible for causing gout. 2 tsp of this medicine should be mixed with milk and taken twice daily.
- Kaishora guggulu — It is a decoction prepared by Panchattka ghritta and Manjistha.
- Guduchyadi taila — This is a external use oil prepared from Guduchi.
Some other Ayurvedic home remedies are as follows –
- Take 2 to 3 cloves of garlic on an empty stomach.
- Mix powdered ginger in ghee made from cow’s milk. Take a few of these with daily meals.
- Boil the bark of Ashvattha tree. Take approx. 50 ml of this decoction twice a day.
- Pound the dried fruit of Harad to make a powder. Take 3 to 5 along with warm water once or twice a day.
- Soak a few methi seeds in water for a night and mash and mix with 1 tsp of honey in the morning.
- Pound some methi seeds and some dried ginger. Mix 1 tsp of each powder into some jaggery and take this twice daily.
Characteristic Symptoms of Gout
- Throbbing pain that starts from a single joint and later spreads to other joints.
- The joints are hot, painful and swollen with shiny skin.
- There may be disability and deformity of the joints in chronic cases.
- Loss of function and movement as the disease progresses.
- Serum uric acid gets elevated.
