Ringworm is a contagious skin disease, which is transmitted through a fungi called dermatophytes. This disease mostly affects hands, feet, scalp, chest and nails. It forms a darkened ring on the skin with a silver border.
The Ayurvedic name for ringworm is ‘dadru‘. Ringworm disease spreads in a circular manner. This disease is caused due to vitiation in the vata dosha. Some beneficial herbs for treatment of ringworms are described in this article.
Ayurvedic Herbs for Treatment of Ringworm
Ringworm can be treated with the help of the following herbs:
- Butea monosperma (Butea) — Butea seeds are an effective treatment for ringworm and eczema disease. Leaves poultice is prepared and applied on the affected area.
- Cassia fistula (Cassia) — Cassia eaves prevent ringworm formation. Fresh leaves are made into the paste form and applied over the affected area.
- Coriandrum sativum (Coriander) — Juice extracted from coriander leaves should be mixed with turmeric and given to the person suffering with this disease. This mixture also helps relieve the dry skin due to ringworms.
- Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) — The juice extracted from tulsi leaves is applied on the affected area. Regular application subsides the ringworm in few days.
- Plumbago zeylanica (Leadwort) — Leadwort leaves are made into the paste form with salt and water and applied locally on the affected region. This mixture also removes the ringworm scars.
- Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) — Lemon leaves are made into the paste form and mixed with buttermilk and applied over the affected area.
- Azadirachta indica (Neem) — This is one of the best treatment in Ayurveda for ringworm. It can be used both externally and internally.
Other dietary treatments for ringworms:
- Sour, spicy, hot and oily foods should be avoided.
- Preserved foods should be prohibited.
- Tea, coffee and other beverages should not be consumed.

I do agree that one of the best remedies for ringworm is using Neem. In fact- I have a Neem tree growing in my garden and, knowing the curative properties it possesses, I chew on a leaf or two every morning. And no – I don’t mind its bitter test. In fact I love it.
