The Ayurvedic name of Measles is Romantika. Measles is a viral disease, occurs mostly in children. One attack of measles gives life long immunity. It is also considered as one of the most contagious disease. There are various Ayurvedic treatments for measles. According to Ayurveda, vitiated kapha and pitta dosha cause this disease. Various Ayurvedic remedies to cure measles are discussed in this article.
Ayurvedic View of Measles
This disease is believed to result from vitiation in both the fire and phlegm humors of the body.
Measles Ayurvedic Cure
- Tamarind — Pound some tamarind leaves and take twice a day.
- Coriander — Soak 1 teaspoon each of coriander and cumin seeds in half glass water overnight. In the morning, mash them, add mishri and drink the water.
- Licorice — Pound a piece of licorice to make a powder. Take approximately, ¼ to ½ teaspoon either with water or mixed in 1 teaspoon honey.
- Turmeric – Pound together a few tamarind leaves and a piece of raw turmeric. Mix this paste in water and take the drink twice or thrice a day.
- Raisins — Soak some raisins in water overnight. Take these in the morning on an empty stomach.
- Prepare a mixture with powders of clove and licorice. Take this in a dose of 3 to 6 grams twice, preferably mixed with a teaspoon of honey or with warm water.
- Add some cow’s ghee into cow’s milk. Add mishri and take it twice daily for some days.
Some Ayurvedic Preparations to cure measles are:
- Brihat Haridra Khanda — Its granules should be taken with a cup of lukewarm water in the dosage of 5 grams.
- Mahalaxmi Vilas Ras — Its ½ tablet should be taken thrice daily.
- Tribhuvan Kirti Ras — Its 1 tablet should be taken thrice daily with warm water.
- Swarn Makshik Bhasma — This is also another drug to cure measles. It should be taken in the doses of 125 mg thrice daily.

Characteristic Symptoms of Measles
- Fever, headache, general malaise, cold and cough, photophobia, conjunctivitis and discharge from the eyes are early symptoms of measles.
- Koplick spots emerge on the mucous membranes.
- Perhaps on the fourth day of the fever, a characteristic rash appears, starting from the face and behind the ears, and later spreads all over the body.
Measles can spread from an infected person to others by sneezing and coughing. Hence, one should maintain distance from an infected person.
