What is hyper-pigmentation?
Hyper-pigmentation is also known as melasma. It is a condition that occurs due to excessive production or accumulation of melanin, a skin pigment. It can be caused due to a number of factors like skin infections, pregnancy, overexposure to sun, hormonal changes and some more. There are many different remedies suggested for this condition but many prefer to go the natural way, preferring herbal medicines to complicated treatments.
Ayurvedic hyper-pigmentation remedies
There are many remedies in Ayurveda for this condition using natural herbs and mixtures. These are completely safe and can be used by everybody to get relief from this condition.
Some Ayurvedic herbs that are used in the treatment of this condition are named below. (These are their Ayurvedic and botanical names.)
- Nimba (Azadirachta indica)
- Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia)
- Chandan (Santalum album)
- Haridra (Curcuma longa)
- Khadeer (Acacia catechu)
- Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis)
- Karanj (Pongamia pinnata)
They can be used as it is as herbs or can be mixed to make ointments to be used as sunscreen and protect against further darkening of skin.
Along with these, there are some Ayurvedic herbal medicinal mixtures that can help with melasma.

Other than these typically Ayurvedic herbs, there are some other herbal remedies that can help with the problem of skin darkening and excessive pigmentation.
Citrus: This refers usually to lemon. You can mix lemon juice with turmeric powder to make a paste ans apply over the affected area. Or you could also mix lemon juice with honey and apply. Leave on for sometime and then wash off with plain water. This bleaches skin and thereby helps lighten skin but may burn or irritate if skin is broken or chapped.
Potato juice: This contains starch that might have some bleaching properties. You can take some fresh potato juice and apply it all over the affected areas, leave on for some time and then wash it off with plain water.
Vinegar: You can mix equal quantities of white vinegar and water and rinse the affected areas of your skin with this solution. Then rinse well with plain water. Do this once everyday till you skin starts getting better. The acetic acid present in vinegar helps bleach and lighten skin.
