Ayurveda lists a number of body types. They are classified according to the kinds of illnesses a certain body type experiences. Each body type is a combination of two of the five elements, namely, earth, fire, water, air and ether. Too much of one element can harm the presence and balance of the other.
According to Ayurveda, there are three basic body types, namely, Pitta, Vata and Kapha.
- Pitta: Water and Fire
- Vata: Air and Ether
- Kapha: Water and Earth
All three are present in each and every being, without exception. But one type is dominant and shows up more than the other two. This dominant body type determines the health and health problems of the individual. It also determines which foods are good and which are bad for consumption.
Ayurvedic Pitta Dosha
Pitta Dosha is one of the body types. It is made of two elements — water and fire. These need to be well balanced for an individual of this body type to be healthy. If there is too much fire, it it boils and evaporates the water, creating an imbalance. On the other hand, if there is too much of water, it douses the fire, again causing an imbalance.
Some of the physiological processes that Pitta governs are body temperature, metabolism, digestion, assimilation, absorption, skin color, luster of the eyes, understanding and intelligence. Emotions like jealousy, hatred and anger are also controlled by this body type.
Diet that can imbalance this body type are those high in fats and oils, contain too much caffeine, spices, salt as well as foods like alcohol and red meat. Other factors that can cause an imbalance are strong-willed, determined, energetic and frequently take initiatives. They are of medium build with a strong physique and have good sexual vigor. They have sensitive skin and are prone to disorders of the digestive system as well as of the skin.
