There are many factors that can make you lose your appetite. In Ayurveda, there are three basic Doshas or body types, namely, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each of these is governed by two of the five basic elements of Earth, Fire, Water, Ether and Air and each of these Doshas governs some part of the physiological and psychological processes.
Along with this, there are six basic tastes or Shad Rasa that all foods are classified into, namely, Sour, sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Practitioners will tell you that the key to good health is a balance of all these tastes in your everyday diet. Many Western diets have a lot of the sour, salty and sweet but almost none of the other three basic tastes.
Ayurvedic diet for getting better appetite
According to Ayurveda, each individual has a dominant Dosha along with individual unique metabolism and body constitution. Even though there is no diet that is prescribed for everyone due to these differences, there are some herbs and foods that promote better digestive health and can be followed by almost everyone.
One of the important foods to be included in daily diet are fresh vegetables and fruits as well as whole grains. Dark green leafy vegetables are specially recommended as part of the daily diet. They contain carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fiber or roughage. These nutrients promote better digestion and provide instant energy. Because they contain roughage, they help in clearing the stomach of any accumulated impurities and toxins.
Along with these foods, there are some herbs and spices like ginger, cardamom, fenugreek, turmeric, cumin and coriander that are very beneficial for good digestive health. They are used in Ayurvedic medicines but it is best if you can include them in your daily diet. They help in clearing toxins from the body. Not only this, they also help in better digestion and absorption of nutrients from the digested foods.
Ayurveda also has, along with all these, a compatibility factor for different foods. There are some foods that go well with each other while some others that are better not consumed together. If these foods are consumed at the same time, they might cause imbalances in the digestive system and give you an upset stomach or other problems.
You should take all these factors into account while planning an Ayurveda diet for yourself. It is best if you take the assistance of a Practitioner of Ayurveda for better planning and understanding of the system and plan your diet accordingly.
