The Ayurvedic term for nose bleeding is Nasagata Raktapitta or Nakseera. Bleeding nose is called Epistaxis in medical terminology. There are various remedies in Ayurveda for bleeding nose. It is one of the common problems faced by some people in the summer time.
If you suffer regular bleeding nose on one side and it occurs without warning, it can be attributed to physical exercise, sneezing, weather and having cold. Bleeding nose in people above 50 years of age can be due to high blood pressure. The Ayurvedic view of nose bleeding says it happens due to vitiation in the pitta or fire humor of the body.
Ayurvedic Remedy for Bleeding Nose
- Alum — Fine powder of alum or phitkari/sphatika should be mixed with cow ghee (clarified butter oil). This should be instilled into the nostrils to stop bleeding.
- Camphor — Camphor should be dissolved in green coriander juice and instilled into the nostrils. It would stop bleeding.
- Amla — Take 20 gms of Amla soaked overnight and strained in the morning. Then strain the water in the morning and apply Amla paste over the nose and forehead. It will stop bleeding.
- Sandalwood, Licorice and Cobra’s saffron (naagakesara) — These ingredients should be taken in equal proportion and made into a fine powder. Take 3 gms of this powder with milk daily.
- Pomegranate — Powder of pomegranate used as snuff also relieves nose bleeding. Two drops of Juice of pomegranate flowers if instilled into nostrils help stops bleeding nose.
- Peepal (Ficus religiosa) — Ripened Peepal fruits should be eaten with jaggery or honey to stop bleeding.
- Banana leaf — Prepare a paste of 2 gms of Banana leaf with 1 liter of water and 20 gms of crystal sugar. Drink half cup of the solution twice a day.
- Onion — Chewing white onions and inhaling the fumes produced by burning them stops nasal bleeding.
- Camphor, alum and oak galls should be taken in equal quantities and powdered and put into small doses into bleeding nostrils.
Ayurvedic Medicines to Cure Nose Bleeding
- Vasa Avalehya — 1 tsp mixed in a cup of cold milk should be taken thrice a day.
- Chyavanaprash — It should be taken 1 tsp twice daily with milk.
- Anu Tailam — This is an oil and 2 to 4 drops should be put into each nostril to stop bleeding.
Some other home remedies to stop nose bleeding are as follows –
- Hold a piece of ice on the head or bridge of the nose for sometime.
- Pound 8 to 10 leaves of sheesham, add 1 tsp of mishri and take with water 2 or 3 times a day.
- Mix ½ tsp of alum powder in a glass of cold buttermilk. Take this twice a day.
- A cloth dipped in alum powder can be kept on the bridge of the nose for some time to control bleeding.
- A person should stay away from salty, sour and pungent tastes as they can exacerbate the problem.
Characteristic Symptoms of Bleeding Nose
- Bleeding through the nose.
- If the blood is swallowed, coffee ground vomitus is produced.
- Perhaps there may be signs of shock in case of prolonged or profuse bleeding.
