What is diarrhea?
Diarrhea is commonly known as loose motions and as Atisaar in Ayurvedic terms. It refers to lack of control over passing stools along with frequent watery stools, accompanied by dehydration, abdominal pain and discomfort, nausea and vomiting, along with some more. It may be caused due to infections by viruses or bacteria as well as due to bowel disorders and diseases and allergies or intolerance to certain foods. Ayurvedic remedies like cumin seeds and curry leaves can help treat this condition.
Ayurveda diarrhea remedies
There are some herbs which, when combined with dietary changes, that can help treat this condition and give relief.
Ayurvedic herbs for diarrhea
- Amla fruit and leaves(Indian gooseberry): The dried fruit can be mixed with lemon juice and sugar candy and consumed. The leaves can be ground, mixed with buttermilk or honey and consumed for relief.
- Ajwain (Bishop’s weed): The oil of the seeds of this herb is very helpful in treating loose motions and giving relief.
- Curry leaves: The tender leaves of this herb can be used to effectively treat this condition without any side-effects.
- Cumin seeds: These seeds can be consumed alone or included in cooking for relief from this problem.
- Fenugreek: The seeds of this herb can help in controlling diarrhea and give relief by removing excess water from stools.
- Palash (Butea): The gum of this tree is very helpful in treating this condition. This is a very mild remedy and can be used safely with small children and even infants.
- Sowa (Dill): The seeds of this herb have carminative properties and are usually mixed with fenugreek seeds to treat this condition.
- Khulakudi (Indian pennywort): The leaves of this herb are very mild and can be used to treat this problem in small children.
Ayurvedic diet for diarrhea
- Increase your intake of water to avoid dehydration.
- You can also have lots of liquids like soups, fruit juices, lemonade and glucose mixed with water.
- Include yogurt or curd, buttermilk and milk in your diet.
- Avoid meat and stick to a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Avoid heavy foods like oils, fats, spices and sugars that are not easily digested.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking as this leads to further dehydration.
