Cherry is used in jams, jellies, ice creams, soft drinks and various other food products. However, cherry can cause allergies — both mild and severe. Mild allergies are confined to the mouth resulting in itching of the mouth, tongue and throat. Severe reaction can result in hives, abdominal pain and other symptoms. The allergy is caused due to the proteins present in the cherry. The only way to prevent cherry allergy would be to avoid cherry and all products containing cherries.
Cherry and Oral Allergy Syndrome:
Cherry can cause oral allergy syndrome (OAS) which is a milder form of allergy. This allergy can result in itching/burning sensation of mouth, tongue and lips. Tightness of throat and watery eyes can also be observed.
Cherry and associated allergies:
An individual having cherry allergy can also be allergic to apple, apricot, pear, nuts such as hazelnut. This is because similar protein structure is found in both cherries and these fruits/nuts. Allergies to cherry is also associated with carrot and peach allergy.
Symptoms:
Apart form oral symptoms, cherry can also cause the following symptoms:
- Hives, rash, redness
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Breathlessness, dizziness, low blood pressure, throat tightness. These are the symptoms of severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. If these symptoms are observed, the patient should be immediately administered epinephrine to stop the reaction
Prevention of Cherry Allergy:
- Cooking the cherries can prevent the allergy in some people.So, you can try eating cooked cherries. However, even cooked cherries can cause allergies in few cases
- Avoid jams, jellies, ice creams, cakes or other food products containing cherries
- Read the labels of food products and avoid those which contain cherries
- Be careful while eating out and inquire about the ingredients used
Testing and Treatment:
Skin testing and blood testing (RAST) can be done to test for cherry allergy. Once tested, your doctor may prescribe you anti-histamines or corticosteroids to treat the allergy. People with allergy to cherry should always carry an injectable epinephrine to prevent the severe allergic reaction.
