Kids have high risk of developing asthma and allergies if they are exposed to indoor allergens such as cockroach and mouse proteins. This research was done by Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health (CCEH) at Columbia University.
Cockroaches and mouse allergens are most common in the suburbs, inner city areas, urban areas, and crowded apartments. When kids are exposed to these allergens, they have an increased risk of developing wheezing, hay fever, and eczema.
According to the researchers, preschool kids as young as 3 years are most affected when they are exposed to mouse and cockroach allergens. They develop antibodies against these allergens at a very young age, which increases the allergy risk.
This study shows the importance of protecting young children from mouse and cockroach allergens. Eliminating these allergens by various methods will greatly benefit young children by reducing the risk of developing allergies and asthma.
