Dog allergies manifest in three different ways. The most common among the three ways is itching. Itching can be all over or on one area of the dog’s skin. The next common way in which allergies may manifest is through respiratory system. The dog may start sneezing, coughing and wheezing because of reactions in the respiratory system. The third way is through the digestive system. This might make your dog suffer from diarrhea and vomiting.
Ways to deal with the allergic reactions:
For reactions that involve Itching:
First step to take when you see your dog’s abnormal itch, is to confirm if the cause is an allergy or stress. Once it is confirmed that your dog has an allergy get medical help. Use anti-itching shampoos and conditioners for your dog to effectively deal with itching. A few medicated sprays and creams are also available in the market to control itching in your dog. In severe cases of any kind of itch, your dog’s vet may prescribe oral medication or allergic shots.
For reactions that involve the Respiratory System:
Reactions involving respiratory system may be in the form of sneeze, cough and wheezing. Sometimes it may also result into nasal and ocular (eye) discharge. Veterinarians prescribe oral medicines for reactions in the respiratory system. In severe cases steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs are also used to treat the allergic dogs.
For reactions involving Digestive System:
While dealing with reactions like diarrhea or vomiting in your dog, you should be very careful and observant. To find out the right cause of such reactions you will have to try eliminating different foods one by one. Having zeroed in on the food, to which your dog is allergic, will help to control the allergy in your dog. Oral medications may be prescribed to relieve the dog, but the best treatment is to find the offending food so that you can stop giving it to the dog.
