    Effects of Prescription Drug Abuse

    What is prescription drug abuse?
    Prescription drugs are those that should only be taken under the guidance of a certified medical practitioner. But there are some who might get addicted to these drugs. Some others may use these as an alternative to other illegal drugs. But the fact is that these drugs, if abused, can be very dangerous or even fatal. Some prescription drugs are extremely potent and it is very easy to overdose on them. There are a large number of immediate as well as long term effects of prescription drug abuse.

    Effects of prescription drug abuse
    Different types of prescription drugs have different effects on the body and mind. Here, we will try to cover the effects of some of the major prescription drugs that are commonly abused.

    Depressants
    They are generally used to slow down the functioning of the central nervous system. They come in the form of tranquilizers and sedatives.

    Immediate effects

    • Dizziness and fatigue
    • Lowered blood pressure, pulse and breathing
    • Poor concentration and memory
    • Disturbances in vision
    • Depression
    • Confusion and paranoia

    Long term effects

    • Tolerance and addiction
    • Depression
    • Insomnia
    • Sexual problems
    • Anxiety
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Increased risk of heart diseases, diabetes and obesity

    Opioids and morphine derivatives
    These are commonly known as painkillers and contain opium, morphine or their derivatives.

    Immediate effects

    • Slow breathing
    • Drowsiness and poor concentration
    • Nausea
    • Constipation

    Long term effects

    • Addiction and tolerance
    • Severe withdrawal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and insomnia

    Stimulants
    They help increase alertness and energy levels. They also cause an increase in heart rate, breathing and blood pressure.

    Immediate effects

    • Exhaustion and fatigue
    • Apathy
    • Depression

    Long term effects

    • Addiction and tolerance
    • Paranoia
    • Irregular heart beat
    • Excessive rise in body temperature

    Anti-depressants
    These are medications that are used to treat mood swings and depression.

    Immediate effects

    • Irritability
    • Confusion
    • Irregular heartbeat
    • Anxiety and paranoia

    Long term effects

    • Addiction and tolerance
    • Insomnia
    • Incoherent and violent thoughts
    • Hallucinations
    • Thoughts of suicide
    • Nervousness and hostility

    These are just some effects of commonly abused prescription drugs. They are very potent and it is extremely dangerous to use them. You can easily overdose on some of these drugs and this might lead to fatality in some cases. It is, therefore, best to stay away from these drugs altogether, unless they are prescribed by a certified medical practitioner.
