There are many rules in road racing. Some are stated, while others are understood generally. Veteran runners usually welcome newbies to the sport. But, they complain about the ignorant behavior of some newcomers. So, if you are new to road racing, the following tips can help you in your first few road races.
Pay for Your Spot
Always pay and participate in a road race. Gatecrashing a race is called “banditting”. While you may think it is harmless fun, it can actually be unsafe. Course amenities are pre-planned, based on the numbers that sign up before the race. So, the participants may find there is not enough sports drinks or water for all. An overcrowded race can also mean less than prompt medical assistance for anyone who needs it. Besides, banditting is simply not ethical.
Line Up According to Your Pace
If you are a slow runner, don’t hog the start line. This would only delay the faster runners. So, ask your neighbors for their estimated pace. If they are faster than you, move further back to the end.
Don’t Make Jingling Noises
When you are running, avoid carrying noisy keys or loose change. The jingling noise can affect the nerves of nearby runners.
Don’t Hog the Road
If you are running in a group, don’t hog the whole road. Run two abreast, as this will give plenty of space for faster runners to easily pass by.
Say Thanks to Volunteers and Supporters
Express your gratitude to volunteers who hand out water and other necessities. Without their large-hearted volunteering, the race would not be a success. Acknowledge supporters on the roadside with a smile or a wave. This would encourage them to cheer louder for you and for the other runners.
Slow Down at Water Stations
Take it easy and be careful at water stations, as they can be crowded. Make sure there is plenty of space for all runners.
Don’t Stop at the End Line
Don’t stop abruptly at the end line. There may be other runners finishing behind you. So, keep running a little further till you can stop safely.
