Medication After Bariatric Surgery
- Multi-vitamin and minerals supplements are recommended. Supplements for folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D are a must
- As your stomach cannot absorb whole pills it is very important to crush the pills and capsules opened.
- Extended release medication must be avoided, as the absorption is blocked.
- Ulcers are the most difficult problems to diagnose and treat, so it is recommended to use an acid reducer everyday. Ranitidine, or Cimetidine can be used for this purpose and they are easily available in generic forms.
- Never have NSAID drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory), examples include ibuprofen, aspirin, Advil, Celebrex, Motrin and others.

- To prevent nutritional deficiency, it is recommended to have a well balanced diet.
- Calorie based diet is important, an initial amount of 400 to 900 calories is preferred immediately after the surgery, and should never exceed 1000 calories.
- Protein goal of 65 to 90 gms per day is required.
- Daily record about the food taken and the calories should be maintained and updated to your dietitian every week for the first six weeks after the surgery. Then a monthly check up is sufficient.
Exercise After Bariatric Surgery
- Start with a 5 minute walk in the morning and afternoon, increase it by 5 minutes each time and reach 15 minutes in 4 weeks.
- You should gradually reach the goal of 45 minute exercise per day, with aerobics and cardio four to five times per week.
- Once you reach a plateau, exercise plan should be revised by adding new activities like strenuous exercises or some thing.
