Worried about your weight? If you did not get any good result from diet routines, exercises and therapies, then surgery to take off that excess weight is a good idea. Stomach Stapling is one of the surgeries, done to reduce the size of the stomach. It is derived from the abdominal stapling methods used by Soviet surgeons during the World War 2.
What is Stomach Stapling?
It is a surgical technique that uses gastric staples for reducing the size of your stomach. It is done by separating the stomach in to two separate pouches. Reducing size of the stomach will limit the amount of food needed to fill the stomach, this helps in managing overeating.
Process of Stomach Stapling
The whole procedure will be performed under anesthesia. Physicians will take a portion of the stomach, around the size of a cricket ball and separate it from the rest of the stomach. Then the doctor will staple that portion of your stomach and divide it off from the other. The food we take will go to the newly separated small area, as it is very small it can take only small amounts of food, thus reducing the food intake.
Types of Stomach Stapling
There are two types of procedures available, but actually only one use staples.
Traditional Stomach Stapling is also called vertical banded gastroplasty, it involves the usage of staples in addition to a band. The pouch created by the band and staples act almost like a new stomach. A dime-sized hole works as a passage between the pouch and the rest of the stomach, the hole is wrapped in a mesh or in a plastic tissue.
Adjustable Gastric Banding is the second type of stomach stapling procedure, and it uses a band for separating the pouch from rest of the stomach. The band acts as a tight belt in restricting the size of your stomach. This band can be adjusted depending on the requirements.
