To stay healthy, one should maintain the immune system’s strength. Ayurveda has devised a number of tonics to prevent sickness and also to maintain a good health. These health tonics in Ayurveda are termed as ‘Rasayanas‘.
The purpose of Ayurvedic tonics is to enhance the strength of the body by strengthening the body’s immunity or ‘Ojas’. The Ayurvedic tonics are of benefit to the people who are underweight, physically weak and have weak muscles. Some Ayurvedic tonics are described in this article.
Tonics in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic tonics not only nourish the body, but mind as well. Some of their recipes are given as below:
- Take 1 almonds, 2 walnuts and 7 raisins. Soak these in the night and eat in the morning with a glass of warm milk. Honey can be added to milk for sweetening. It is the best Ayurvedic rasayana.
- Eat 4 figs with a glass of warm milk in the morning. For sweetening, honey can be added to the milk. This is an excellent tonic which also cures anemia and constipation.
- Make a mixture of 1 parts of dry dates, 2 parts of dry coconut with 3 parts of sugar candy. Cut these dry fruits into small pieces and take 50 grams of this mixture everyday for cure of cold, cough, tonsillitis, indigestion and teeth disorders. Avoid water after consuming this mixture.
- To reduce body fat, consume equal amounts of grated unpeeled carrots and apples. This mixture should be taken every morning on an empty stomach. One can take this mixture in the doses measuring up to 200 grams. One should also not eat anything for two hours after taking this mixture.
- To increase weight of the body, one should consume the above recipe immediately after lunch.
Some Ayurvedic tonics for infants are as follows:
- Soak 1 almond in water in the night and peel it in the morning. Grind it and ix with a gram of honey and give it to 4 months or older baby. This tonic will enhance both the physical and mental development of the baby.
- 2-3 dry dates should be soaked in water morning and boiled them in the evening until its quantity reduces to half. When it gets cool, add one teaspoon of honey for sweetening. Drink milk and eat dates. This can be taken an hour before going to bed. This Ayurvedic tonic strengthens the lungs, cleans the bowel and improves blood circulation.
