Whooping cough or Pertussis is a very common contagious respiratory tract infection caused by the pathogen Bordetella Pertussis bacteria. It is painful, chocking cough followed by intake of breath that sounds “whoop”. Whooping cough is more common among the children and infants.
Modern medicine prevents whooping cough with preventive vaccines, but not so efficient in curing the disease once infected. Herbal remedies for whooping cough can ease the patient from the painful symptoms of the disease.
Symptoms
Whooping cough starts with sore throat and tiredness, within 3 days it may become dry cough. This condition continues for 7 to 10 days and cough may become slightly productive with little phlegm. After 2 weeks, chocking cough— that last for 1 to 2 minutes, may start; the patient may vomit after the cough. This chocking cough may attack 2 to 15 times a day. Normally, Whooping cough will continue for 2 to 3 weeks or it depends on the kind of treatment patient is undergoing.
Herbal Remedies for Fighting Whooping Cough
The following remedies are effective for reducing the symptoms associated with whooping cough:
- Garlic— prepare garlic juice and administer 1 table spoon twice a day
- Honey—take one glass of boiled water and add I table spoon honey, mix well and have it four times a day
- Ginger, Fenugreek & Honey— boil one tablespoon of fenugreek in one glass of water, add one tsp of honey and one tsp ginger juice. Have this drink two times a day
- Calamus and Honey—mix a pinch of calamus powder with honey and take twice a day
- Onion and Honey— extract juice of onion and mix it with honey, take I tablespoon twice a day
- Cabbage Soup —have cabbage soup everyday, it will give you a soothing effect
- Carrot Juice—prepare carrot juice and have it twice or thrice a day
- Radish Syrup—make a syrup of radishes and raw cane sugar, take one table spoon everyday
Diet for Whooping Cough
Along with the herbal remedies, sufficient rest and proper diet will ease you off the painful and harassing symptoms of whooping cough. Following is a diet plan for the patients suffering from Whooping Cough:
- Orange juice— orange juice is rich in Vitamin-C that fights against infections and infestations. Having a glass of orange twice a day will help your body to fight against the bacteria and also improve your immunity
- fruit diet—eating fresh juicy fruits like grapes, oranges, pineapples, peaches, apples, pears, and melons will increase your immunity
- Balanced diet— diet containing whole grain cereals, lightly cooked vegetables or raw vegetables and fat-free preparations will help body to fight the disease in a better way
- Avoid tea, coffee, condiments, pickles, meats, sugar refined and processed foods, soft drinks, candies, ice-cream
Since Wsshooping cough is contagious please cover the phlegm and use a towel while sneezing or coughing. Try to wash your hands often.
