It is a condition which causes swelling of the conjunctiva and the outer eyelids. Actually, in this condition two separate eye conditions occur simultaneously – conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Outer eyelids get affected with blepharitis and conjunctivitis occurs in the conjunctiva.
Staphylococcus aureus is the bacteria which causes blepharitis. Common symptoms are burning or itching sensation of eye, red eyelids or severe dry skin flakes on the eyelid. This infection can be treated by the use of an eyelid cleaner. If blepharitis is not treated, it can spread to the conjunctiva.
If the blepharitis spreads to the conjunctiva, it may result in occurrence of conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pink eye. It can be caused by allergies and also occur by itself. In infants, it may occur due to blocked tear ducts. Blepharoconjunctivitis occurs when the bacteria which causes blepharitis spreads to the mucous lining present inside the eye. It irritates eye blood vessels and gives pink color to the eyes.
Not only irritated blood vessels but the eyes may also itch and burn. Blepharoconjunctivitis may result in thin discharge from the inner eye.
This infection is contagious. It can occur due to bacterial exposure through use of contact lenses, skin to skin contact or through the use of eye makeup products. When a person is infected with blepharoconjunctivitis, he/she is recommended to avoid contact with others until the infection is treated. Contact with other people may spread the disease to others.
Antibacterial medications are usually sufficient to treat the infection caused by bacteria. Typically this medication is available in the form of eye drops. It is also available in a topical version and it is directly applied to the surface of the eyeballs and eyelids. It is also recommended for small children and babies who find difficulty in using eye drops. Temporary vision impairment can be caused by using medications, but usually it subsides within 30 minutes.
