Glaucoma is an eye disease that results in the optic nerve damage and affects the vision. This disease can be prevented if it is detected early. This article gives information about symptoms, causes and types of glaucoma eye disease.
Symptoms of Glaucoma Eye Disease
Following are some of the symptoms:
- Glaucoma often goes undetected and it causes irreversible eye damage.
- Usually symptoms are not found early. But later on, you can notice some symptoms like nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and fainting.
- The eyes becomes more sensitive to light and in the advanced stage of the disease, the vision may be completely impaired.
Causes of Glaucoma Eye Disease
- Usually glaucoma occurs when fluid accumulates in the eye, causing more pressure which eye cannot withstand. This fluid is drained out by the canal. If there is any obstruction in the canal, it prevents proper drainage.
- Other case may be production of more fluid and it cannot be simply drained fast, resulting in high intraocular pressure. Other causes may be genetic disorders, trauma and flow of blood is low to the optic nerve.
- Physical injury to the nerves or the eye can also result in glaucoma eye disease.
- Age also plays an important role in the eye health.
- Congenital defects in the eye can also cause glaucoma in infants.
- Some people suffer from this disease due to hereditary.
Types of Glaucoma
Two types of glaucoma: primary open-angle or chronic glaucoma and acute closed-angle glaucoma.
- Acute closed-angle glaucoma: It happens quickly and an attack may often produce a painful, red eye and symptoms like headachessss, blurry vision, facial pain, vomiting and nausea.
- Open-angle glaucoma: Chronic glaucoma damage the eyes without any warning signs. Chronic is the common type is often known as the “silent type.” Usually damage occurs without any notice.
