Laser eye surgery is also known as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). This is a type of refractive surgery for correcting astigmatism, hyperopia and myopia. It is performed by ophthalmologists using a laser. This surgical procedure is similar to Photorefractive Keratectomy (PSA). Lasik provides benefits like faster patient recovery.
If you are recovering from laser eye surgery, then you should try to follow your doctor’s post operative instructions. You can follow few tips to add to the comfort during the first few days after your surgery:
- You should drink lots of water. Usually you should drink 8 glasses of water everyday. But while your body is still recovering, you may want to increase your water intake. There are other good alternatives such as fruit and vegetable juices. Herbal teas are also a good option but avoid coffee as it is diuretic.
- Applying an ice pack on the treated eye can be very soothing. You should apply it for 20 minutes. If it is less than 20 minutes, then the beneficial effects can’t happen. But if you keep it longer then 20 minutes, you can undo the benefits.
- You can ask a family member to instill the eye drops for you if your doctor has asked you to include eye drops in post operative program. If you wear contact lenses, you may find it difficult to control your eyelids for a few days. Remember that this is a temporary discomfort.
- The most important point is that you should get plenty of sleep. Few doctors suggest sleeping pills for first few days. Make it a habit to close your eyes while taking rest.
- Avoid going to smoky rooms or areas with chemical vapors such as a darkroom.
- Don’t go anywhere without sunglasses as you may be extremely sensitive to light for a while.
