Pterygium is the condition in which a vascular growth of pink color takes place from the conjunctiva of the eye and comes up to the cornea. These normally occurs from the inner surface of the eye and extends towards the pupil. If incidentally they fall in the way of the vision formation they can hinder the process of vision formation too.
This disease is commonly found in the people who spend most of the time outdoors and especially in the sunny climates. Pterygium are considered to be benign tumors which are non malignant tumors. So, This disease do not enter inside the eye, sinuses or brain. This disease do not even spread to any other part of your body.
Causes Of Pterygium:
The main cause for this disease to appear is not known. But, it is normally found in the people who are living in the sunny and windy climate. Those who are exposed to the ultra violet rays, infra red light are more prone to have this disease.
If you are exposed to the chronic irritation due to dry climate then also there are chances for this disease to grow. Heredity and gene transfer from parents to their offspring can also result in the formation of this disease.
Symptoms Of Pterygium:
This disease is external can be noticed easily from outside. Some formal symptoms that can be noticed are:
- Redness in the eye
- Irritation in the eye
- Tearing
- Astigmatism
- Problem in the vision
Treatment Of Pterygium:
In case the disease is not very serious it do not require much of the treatment. Ointments and drops and relieve the symptoms and also cure the disease itself. But, in case the disease becomes serious. For instance chronic irritation is there and vision is hindered then it requires a surgery to remove the obstruction.
Surgery once done do not means that disease can not reappear. There are chances for this to reoccur again. In order to prevent Pterygium from recurrence the methods like implantation of the conjunctiva, chemotherapy means can be applied.
